About Ian Merkel

Greetings!

Thanks for bumping onto my little place on internet:80.  ianmerkel.com is the one place on the web (other than perhaps my various accounts on several social networking sites which will feed out of here) where I will expound on the “three Ps”: the personal, the professional, and the political.

I am unashamed in many things and mute in others.  Those who know me quite well can attest to several realities that are not readily available upon initial sighting.  I am old-fashioned yet progressive in matters that are best served by the advances that have become available.

In the professional realm, as a web developer I tend to prefer open-source solutions that cater to a community.  Close-sourced solutions will always have their place in computing and the various societies they serve, however at the end of the day, the vast majority of the world are better served by the community serving helping itself.

In all matters political, I favor political conservatism and classical liberalism.  Those who really understand conservatism are aware that conservatism believes more in the promulgation of individual freedoms and less in the expansion of the State; that while government should be there to aid you in the worse of times, at no time should it become responsible for what should be the personal responsibilities and choices that its citizenry must exercise.

Personally, I’m a mash up of the many predilections.  I am enjoy great meals, from the simple to the sublime and everything in between; music is my inspirational muse and history the film to its soundtrack.  If religion is the opiate of the masses, then Roman Catholicism is my preferred drug.  The list goes on, but at the end of the day, I’m just like most everyone else, nothing too out of the ordinary.
